I’ve just started building a new house and will soon have to finish the interior. Does anyone have any good ideas for saving $$ when it comes to travetine tile, granite countertops, carpet etc. I had someone suggest shopping for granite remnants…I would love to come in under budget for all of this stuff so I don’t kill my husband with the mortgage.

For carpet, do not go to Lowe’s, Menard’s, etc. They have killer and outrageous prices. Go to a carpet factory outlet store. The best thing to do is to get the same carpet throughout the house instead of different colors for different rooms. Beige is the best color choice. By doing this it will save money and be a good selling point, if you decide to sell in the future.

I just remodeled my house and I was $4,000 under budget. The most important thing to remember is, don’t go cheap when it comes to your kitchen or bathrooms. I mean, don’t go overboard, but do your research. Check the listings of other homes in the area. Example: granite counter tops are very popular, but in my neighborhood, it’s a waste of money. I went with a nice brand of laminate with a beveled edge… looks like granite but without the granite price! Kitchen cabinets – I had custom made cabinets put in and everyone thought I spent about $30,000 on them. I only spent $6,000. I researched local cabinet makers instead of going to big name companies. Tiles – personally, I think Lowes or Home Depot carry nice brands. I used slate tiles for my kitchen and they look awesome and were only $1.75/sq. ft. Bottom line, just do research and don’t rush into buying things. Good luck and have fun decorating!

If you haven’t all ready planned to do this are up for it, you could save a pretty good piece of change by painting the inside of your house yourself. When we built our house 12 years ago, the cost to paint was about $14,000 and I bet it is probably $20,000 or $25,000 to do it today.
