One of the most important tips for saving money on groceries is to shop at more expensive grocery stores. In fact, saving money on groceries is easy when you shop at more expensive stores. Now if you doubt that, and wonder about my sanity, let me explain.

It's possible to save money on groceries when you shop at more expensive grocery stores because more expensive grocery stores can afford to put on bigger sales. Since the overall prices of more expensive grocery stores are higher, and since most people are not savvy grocery shoppers, more expensive stores have more money to work with in general and can therefore afford to sell certain items at absolutely ridiculous prices.

More expensive grocery stores are also more likely to double coupons, and you can really make a killing when you combine super sales with doubled coupons.

The important thing to remember when you shop at more expensive stores is to focus solely on the loss leaders -- the items the store actually loses money on in an attempt to just get you in the store.

The thing to remember is that most people will go to the store for the super deals, and then while they are there, they end up throwing several overpriced items into their cart as well.

More expensive grocery stores in fact count on people to do just that, and that is how they can afford to have super sales. The good news is, as a savvy shopper you don't have to play into their hand and can in fact rather make a killing on the loss leaders.

The important thing is to make sure to have a plan and stick with it when shopping at more expensive stores. Buy the loss leaders, with coupons, and then leave the store immediately!

If you follow this plan, you can indeed save a ton of money by shopping at more expensive stores. You can actually shop at more expensive stores almost exclusively if you make a point of stocking up on loss leaders.

That is my personal approach to saving money at the grocery store -- shop at more expensive grocery stores and buy multiples of items when the prices are super low. Doing so enables me to save much more money on groceries than if I chose to shop at discount stores.
